Violet Fields - new album available on Cruel Nature Records - Feb 2024
NNJA RIOT
Nnja Riot, born in New Zealand and currently based in London, is a fusion of noise compositions, darkwave aesthetics, and an experimental attitude. She interweaves the raw energy of noise with melodic layers and pulsating beats to create experimental songscapes. This sonic journey embraces the ethereal essence of dream pop and the enigmatic allure of darkwave, creating a multifaceted musical experience that transcends conventional genres.
Her transition from guitar-based songwriting (Listen Lisse) to the realms of noise experimentation mirrors a relentless quest for authenticity and the unabashed pursuit of sonic innovation together with the element of unpredictability in live performance. With this attitude she ensures that no two performances are ever the same but rather she arranges her compositions so that they can come alive in the moment and expand or develop as they need to in the live sphere. Her samples are a combination of downloaded sample packs, self made sample packs, field recordings of places, self recorded guitar/violin/synth samples, found tapes, sound recordings from Mars and other enigmatic places.
Nnja Riot performs with visuals that are often self made films and footage merged together with found footage from public domain sources or the internet. Her visuals often explore current political narratives reflecting the "riot" aspect of her name where art is a riot: a retaliation against norms, conventional ideals, even a riot against the self. It is an attempt to convey the idea that only when standing up and taking action does real change occur in ourselves and in our society.
